South Dakota is taking a significant leap forward in cybersecurity for rural healthcare, marked by Dakota State University’s recent $1 million grant to launch CyberRx SD. This initiative is set to transform healthcare cybersecurity across the state, focusing on aiding rural and underserved healthcare providers facing economic and technological limitations.
The primary objective of CyberRx SD is to modernize digital systems and bolster cybersecurity resilience within South Dakota’s rural healthcare facilities. This endeavor is part of a broader Digital Health Modernization and Technology Grant Program, supported by South Dakota’s initiative to improve healthcare technology.

Led by Dakota State University’s Applied Research Lab, CyberRx SD aims to deliver vendor-neutral technical assistance tailored to the unique needs of rural healthcare providers. These providers often operate with constrained budgets, aging infrastructure, and increasing cybersecurity and compliance demands. - Dark web and open-source intelligence monitoring.
- Electronic health record optimization and interoperability assistance.
- Workforce training, cybersecurity education, and artificial intelligence literacy.
- Analytics, data intelligence, and population health readiness.
This initiative is part of a $90 million investment by South Dakota in digital health modernization under the federal Rural Health Transformation Program. Such a substantial investment underscores the state’s commitment to securing its healthcare systems against potential cyber threats and ensuring seamless delivery of healthcare services.
Regional Innovation Centers, funded through this program, will serve as collaborative platforms where healthcare, community, academic, and technology partners come together to accelerate digital modernization. CyberRx SD will be a pivotal partner in these efforts, providing hands-on technical assistance, education, and workforce development.
In addition to strengthening South Dakota’s healthcare cybersecurity, the grant will also boost Dakota State University’s applied research growth by activating DARC, the university’s affiliated applied research corporation. DARC is set to create high-skilled jobs across South Dakota, drawing on DSU’s cybersecurity prowess to tackle real-world challenges in sectors including healthcare and national security.
