Preview: South Dakota Women’s Golf Team Tackles Diane Thomason Invitational in Iowa

VERMILLION, S.D. – The South Dakota women’s golf team is gearing up for their penultimate event of the 2026 fall season at the Diane Thomason Invitational. Hosted at the esteemed Davenport Country Club in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, this event promises an exciting competition for the Coyotes as they compete against a formidable lineup of teams. These include Drake, Northern Iowa, Northern Illinois, Montana State, University of Nebraska Omaha, St. Thomas, Missouri State, North Dakota State, Bradley, Bowling Green, Western Michigan, and the hosts, Iowa.
The 54-hole tournament will challenge participants with 36 holes of continuous play on Monday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday. This year marks South Dakota’s second consecutive participation in the Diane Thomason Invitational, showcasing their commitment to excellence in collegiate golf.
The Davenport Country Club, a historical gem that opened its doors in 1924, is renowned for its classic design by celebrated golf architects Charles Hugh Alison and Harry Colt. The 6,287-yard, par-71 course is famously home to a par-4 16th hole, twice hailed as an “All-American Golf Hole” by Sports Illustrated.
As the Coyotes gear up for this significant event, all nine team members will participate, three of whom will compete as individuals. The primary contenders from South Dakota include Ella Greenberg, Ava Schroeder, Morgan Rupp, Eva Greenberg, and Avery O’Donnell. Their performances will be crucial, as only the top four scores contribute to the team’s total score.
Brett Bennett, an esteemed coach and alumnus from the class of 2009, continues to lead the South Dakota women’s golf team with his unparalleled expertise and dedicated leadership. Under his guidance, the program has thrived, attracting talented players from across the levels of collegiate golf.
The weather forecast promises perfect golfing conditions. Players can expect brisk temperatures starting in the mid-50s during the morning hours on Monday, rising to a pleasant 74 degrees by afternoon. Tuesday is also expected to deliver warmer morning temperatures, peaking in the mid-60s with clear skies—ideal for the tournament’s final round.
