SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—In a pivotal move to boost the efficiency of mail services in the heart of the American Midwest, the U.S. Postal Service has announced a major upgrade to its Sioux Falls processing plant. Slated to begin on January 1, 2027, this transformation will turn the existing facility into a Regional Processing and Distribution Center. The upgrade marks the culmination of a comprehensive yearlong assessment of South Dakota’s mail logistics across its three key plants located in Sioux Falls, Huron, and Rapid City.
The Postal Service’s decision to make Sioux Falls the central hub for mail processing underscores the growing importance of the city within the regional network.
Currently, mail originating from Sioux Falls is sent out of state to Omaha, Nebraska, for further processing, but with the new setup, this mail will be handled locally. This change is expected to speed up mail delivery times significantly, potentially reducing letter delivery times by one to two days within the state. Furthermore, intrastate mail from Huron and Rapid City, which previously went through Fargo, North Dakota, and Denver, Colorado, will soon be rerouted to Sioux Falls. This adjustment is anticipated to eliminate several redundancies in the state’s mail flow and improve service standards for the residents of South Dakota.
Manny Lopez, Vice President of the American Postal Workers Union, expressed his enthusiasm for the planned changes. “I am so excited, South Dakota’s mail is coming home. Sioux Falls P&DC will become South Dakota’s Regional Processing & Distribution Center, meaning all South Dakota mail will be sorted right here in Sioux Falls. This brings back timely, dependable service and upholds the integrity of mail delivery for our communities, from Tea to Timber Lake,” said Lopez. He praised Senator Mike Rounds for his consistent support and pressure on the USPS to facilitate these improvements.
The original catalyst for this overhaul was the 2023-2024 Mail Processing Facility Review. It revealed inefficiencies stemming from routing state mail through different out-of-state hubs. In response, new technology has been integrated into the Sioux Falls facility, including a state-of-the-art Parallel Induction Linear Sorter installed in June 2026. Operating 40% faster than older equipment, this machine exemplifies the larger effort to improve package sorting speed, automation, and accuracy across South Dakota’s mail facilities.
