South Dakota Army National Guard: Celebrating Best Warriors in a State Steeped in Heritage and Bravery
The South Dakota Army National Guard recently celebrated the exceptional talents and dedication of its top Soldiers during the state’s Best Warrior Competition awards ceremony on September 13. This prestigious event, held over three days amidst the stunning landscapes of South Dakota, tested the physical, tactical, and leadership skills of its participants.
Sgt. Logan Larsen from the 211th Engineer Company emerged victorious in the noncommissioned officer (NCO) category, while Spc. Aaron Van Hemert from the 196th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade clinched the title for junior enlisted. Both warriors exemplify the spirit of South Dakota and will proudly represent our state at the Region 6 Best Warrior Competition in the summer of 2027, which, fittingly, will be hosted in South Dakota itself.
Command Sgt. Maj. Marcus Stacey, South Dakota Army National Guard’s senior enlisted leader, shared his admiration for the contenders, Every competitor arrived ready to compete, learn and give their best.
He praised their resilience, Despite fatigue and unfamiliar events, motivation remained high from the opening fitness event until the final Soldier crossed the ruck-march finish line. Their professionalism, perseverance and genuine support for one another represented the very best of the South Dakota Army National Guard.
Brig. Gen. David Dailey, South Dakota National Guard assistant adjutant general for Army, echoed this sentiment by commending the warriors for accepting such a formidable challenge, noting, No matter how today turned out, this weekend turned out, you’re already the top of the organization that you’re supporting — the best of what we’ve got.

Participants undertook events inspired by the E3B format, encompassing rigorous standards from the Expert Soldier Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, and Expert Field Medic Badge.
