Josh Lunak began his athletic journey in a somewhat unconventional manner. At a tender age of 6 or 7, Lunak picked up a racquet—not for tennis, but for racquetball. Despite his early inclination toward racquetball, the limited opportunities for junior players in this sport pushed him to explore the lush green courts of tennis. “There weren’t a lot of junior players back then,” Lunak recounted. Inspired by the thriving junior tennis programs run by legends like Tim and Tom Wynne, Lunak found his passion and never looked back.
The journey of this remarkable athlete took him through various prestigious tournaments across the region, including those held in South Dakota. “We used to have the Junior Aces tennis program,” Lunak recalled. “It was a traveling program where Tim and Tom took us in 15-passenger vans to different tournaments across the region. When I was 10, I’d travel and stay at hotels in Aberdeen, Bismarck, Fargo. . . there’d be 10-12 of us doing tournaments the whole summer.”
At the high school level in North Dakota, Lunak became one of the state’s most decorated tennis players, eventually securing the North Dakota boys singles title in 1999. His collegiate career at St. Cloud State in Minnesota was just as sparkling, as he clinched four North Central Conference singles titles and three doubles titles. His formidable presence on the court was defined by his baseline strategy and uncompromising forehand.

After college, Lunak transitioned seamlessly into coaching, starting at South Dakota State University. In doing so, he became the youngest head coach in Division I, a testament to his profound understanding of the game and leadership qualities. Currently, Lunak serves as a coach and academic advisor at the University of Minnesota Crookston.
