In a remarkable testament to determination and athletic excellence, South Dakota’s own Ella Boekelheide concluded her illustrious high school cross country career with yet another triumph at the state meet in Huron, illustrating the spirit and character that define the vibrant communities of the state. As a senior at Northwestern High School, Boekelheide has become a symbol of perseverance and dedication, not just in her school, but across the state.
A shining star of Northwestern’s athletic program, Boekelheide clinched her third state championship title, having previously won as an eighth grader and a junior. Her final high school race saw her crossing the finish line with an impressive 18:44.27, securing a nearly 28-second lead over runner-up Nora Olsen from Deubrook Area. This victory stands as a crowning achievement in an already storied career.
“Cross country is really just you against your mind, even if there is someone next to you,” Boekelheide shared. “In those moments, the mentality of the sport takes over. It definitely helps when you’re running if you have someone to push you, but when you’re out there by yourself, you really have to stay focused.” Her words resonate with athletes throughout South Dakota, where the grit and determination often found in the rural landscapes foster athletes of exceptional caliber.
As a hallmark of her athletic journey, Boekelheide has faced numerous challenges, including balancing her role as a setter on the Northwestern volleyball team, currently holding the No. 2 seed in the Class B volleyball standings. Her ability to juggle multiple sports during a single season highlights her versatility and commitment, common traits seen in South Dakota’s multi-sport athletes, who often need to excel in various disciplines due to the small school environments.
Reflecting on her time at Northwestern, she expressed pride in the team’s second-place finish, just behind Ipswich. “I love those girls. It’s just so fun to be with them every day and push each other. It’s amazing to see them succeed,” Boekelheide added, showcasing the camaraderie and team spirit that resonate deeply within South Dakota’s communities. These values are integral to the local culture, emphasizing cooperation and mutual support in all endeavors.

Looking ahead, Boekelheide is set to continue her athletic career at South Dakota State University (SDSU), a decision influenced by her appreciation for tight-knit communities like those she has known. “Northwestern, it’s a small, tight knit community and I think SDSU is also tight knit, and I think those environments are very similar. It’ll be an easier transition,” Boekelheide highlighted, pointing out the seamless cultural fit that SDSU offers.
The commitment to team culture and personal development is something deeply valued at SDSU as well, providing an environment that nurtures both academic and athletic prosperity. “I love the blue collar feel of SDSU, just every day coming and betting on yourself and just being so committed to yourself in the sport,” she elaborated, expressing excitement over joining a community that mirrors the values she holds dear.
Balancing the dual demands of cross country and volleyball has crafted Boekelheide into a model of responsibility and time management, skills that have been honed through her commitment to both sports. “Having a practice in the morning and a practice at night, you really have to re-fuel, rest, and recover well,” she explained. These attributes are not only essential for athletic success but are also vital life skills that will serve her well at the collegiate level and beyond.
As she embarks on this new chapter, Boekelheide carries with her the legacy of a high school career marked by resilience, talent, and an unwavering determination to excel. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “This one definitely has more emotion attached to it since it is my last race… I wanted to go out with a bang.”
Ella Boekelheide’s achievements exemplify the essence of South Dakota’s sporting spirit, a blend of tenacity, community, and excellence that continues to inspire young athletes across the state.
