VERMILLION, S.D. — The South Dakota Coyotes are poised to make a resounding start to their 2026 softball season as they travel to Huntsville, Texas, to compete in the Bearkat Classic. With games scheduled against notable opponents like Central Arkansas, Sam Houston, and Creighton, the Coyotes aim to showcase their prowess and build on their impressive 2025 season.

The Coyotes, proudly representing the University of South Dakota, ended their 2025 campaign with a notable record of 32-24. They demonstrated their formidable skill in the Summit League Championships, finishing second to Omaha. The team’s offensive and defensive metrics were stellar, with a second-best conference team batting average of .309 and leading in triples with 16. The Coyotes also topped the Summit League in innings pitched at 373.2 and an outstanding ERA of 2.72.

Returning to the 2026 roster are several standout players who have been significant contributors to the Coyotes’ past successes. Sophomore Ella McGee, a First Team All-Summit honoree, will be a critical asset for the Coyotes.

Alongside McGee, Junior Abi Brown and Sophomore Madison Evans, both Second Team All-Summit players, will reinforce the team’s core strength.

This season, the Coyotes will benefit from the talent of Peyton Paulsen, who transfers in as the 2025 NJCAA Pitcher of the Year. Paulsen, along with formidable catcher recruit Katie Hofmann, brings a wealth of experience and skill that promises to enhance the Coyotes’ competitive edge. South Dakota’s coaching staff, including new assistant coach Clara Edwards—a former Coyote standout herself—is determined to utilize these new additions to build a dynamic and resilient team.

Central Arkansas, no stranger to fierce competition, finished their 2025 season with a 28-27 record. Historically, the Coyotes have faced challenges against the Bears, holding a 1-4 all-time record. The Bears boast the return of Addie Graham, a powerhouse player recognized as last season’s Freshman of the Year in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Another thrilling matchup awaits the Coyotes in their game against Sam Houston, a team that made its first Conference USA tournament appearance last season. The Bearkats aim to leverage the prowess of pitcher Abigail Young, known for holding a conference-best ERA of 1.66.

The Creighton Bluejays present yet another formidable opponent. Creighton, picked second in the Big East Preseason Poll, carries a rich history with South Dakota, leading their all-time encounters 20-8. Despite this, the Coyotes are determined to overturn these stats and claim victory.

New recruits joining the Coyotes this year include Kiya Johnson and Allie Cromer, both of whom bring a wealth of talent from their previous collegiate experiences. Johnson’s offensive threat and Cromer’s consistent performance at the plate are expected to add depth to the team’s lineup.

As the South Dakota Coyotes gear up for their season-opening games, fans and supporters can stay updated with the latest scores and developments through live stats and broadcasts provided by the hosting Bearkat Classic. This season marks an exciting journey for the Coyotes as they aim to not only solidify their presence in the Summit League but also to make a significant mark on the national stage.
