Governor Larry Rhoden today proudly announced Nick Lamb as the new Secretary for the South Dakota Department of Corrections, marking a significant step in the state’s ongoing efforts to enhance its correctional system. This decision comes after an exhaustive national search and rigorous interview process, ensuring that the best candidate was selected to uphold safety and security within South Dakota’s correctional facilities.

“After an extensive interview process and aggressive national search, we found the right person that will help keep our corrections system strong and safe for both inmates and officers,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “Nick’s leadership will ensure strong implementation of rehabilitation services that will reduce recidivism and keep our communities safe. I am grateful for Secretary Wasko’s service and trust that Nick will pick up the torch with excellence, tenacity, and a heart to serve.”
Bringing with him 31 years of correctional leadership experience, Nick Lamb has diligently served in the Illinois, New Mexico, and Iowa Departments of Corrections. In his most recent role as the Deputy Director of Institutional Operations for the Iowa DOC, Lamb managed nine facilities with over 2,500 employees and approximately 8,500 inmates. This extensive background positions him as an expert poised to address the complex challenges of South Dakota’s correctional system.
Beyond his civilian career, Lamb is a retired Staff Sergeant from the United States Army National Guard, where he dedicated 21 years to service across Illinois, Iowa, and New Mexico. His exemplary military service has been recognized with numerous honors including the Two Army Achievement Medal and Army Commendation Medal with a Combat Device.

Lamb’s predecessor, Secretary Kellie Wasko, notably contributed to the state’s DOC for the past three-and-a-half years. Her strategic initiatives have left an indelible mark on South Dakota’s correctional landscape, paving the way for her successor to build on her successes. “I am honored and humbled to have been selected as the next Secretary of Corrections by Governor Rhoden,” Lamb stated. “I also want to thank outgoing Secretary Kellie Wasko for her many years of service to the State of South Dakota and for the positive changes she initiated during her tenure.”
As the current DOC Deputy Secretary, Brent Fluke, assumes the role of Interim Secretary on October 21, 2025, until Lamb officially begins his tenure in mid-November, the transition is expected to be seamless. The emphasis remains on continuity and advancement of rehabilitation efforts that align with South Dakota’s commitment to fostering a safer community.
South Dakota, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and friendly communities, continuously strives to improve its public services. The appointment of Nick Lamb exemplifies the state’s dedication to maintaining effective corrections management and prioritizing public safety. With his vast experience, South Dakota residents can expect an era of strengthened initiatives aimed at reducing recidivism rates and supporting inmate rehabilitation.
With Lamb at the helm, the focus will be on refining rehabilitation programs to not only deter crime but also empower inmates with the skills needed for successful reintegration into society. “I look forward to continuing the department’s mission by working with our dedicated staff to rebuild lives and strengthen public safety with accountability,” Lamb affirmed.
Nurturing a family-oriented community culture, Nick Lamb and his wife, who are soon to welcome their 15th grandchild, demonstrate a personal commitment to values that resonate deeply within the DNA of South Dakota’s communities. Lamb’s academic background, reinforced by a master’s degree in psychology, further empowers him to understand and address the psychological aspects of correctional management.
The future of South Dakota’s correctional system is promising under the guidance of Nick Lamb, whose leadership is expected to catalyze transformative changes in correctional operations that reflect the state’s values. As he prepares to assume office, the collective hope is for a fortified system that protects and rehabilitates, embodying the spirit of South Dakota — a state known for its vibrant community life and unwavering pursuit of safety and welfare for all its residents.
