Argene “Gene” A. Kirschenmann, a cherished resident of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, peacefully passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on Saturday, February 21, 2026. Born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, on June 19, 1942, Gene’s life reflected the strong community values and the pioneering spirit that define the people of South Dakota.

Gene attended public school in Aberdeen until his family moved to Sioux Falls in 1959, where he graduated from Washington High School in 1960. After high school, Gene enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving from February 1960 until his honorable discharge in July 1962 at Rapid City, South Dakota.

Returning to Sioux Falls, Gene married Helen Matthaei on October 13, 1969. The couple raised three children—Corey, Chad, and Tracie—in the vibrant Sioux Falls community, contributing to the city’s diverse cultural landscape. Gene’s career spanned 25 years, working as a route sales representative for Sara Lee and Earthgrains. During this time, he developed deep relationships with local businesses and residents, cementing his legacy within the community.

In addition to his sales career, Gene was an entrepreneur, owning Mini Critters for about five years. This venture reflected both his entrepreneurial spirit and his love for animals, a passion that resonated with the Sioux Falls population, known for their love of the outdoors and animals.

Gene was an active member of the Sioux Falls Lions Club, where he worked on initiatives to improve the community and support Lions Club International’s global causes. His contributions to the Lions Club highlighted his commitment to giving back and fostering community spirit, values highly regarded in South Dakota.

In his spare time, Gene was an avid golfer and spent countless hours on the beautiful golf courses of South Dakota, but his greatest passion was his family. Whether attending local events or spending quiet evenings at home, family was at the heart of Gene’s life.

Gene’s legacy is one of love, dedication, and community service, and his impact on Sioux Falls will be remembered for years to come. He is survived by his wife, Helen Kirschenmann, sons Corey (Nikole Osman) and Chad (Julie), and daughter Tracie Penner, along with seven grandchildren: Isabel, Cash, Cameron, Jessica, Josh, Ashley, and Shawn. His siblings, Shirley Halveson of Texas, Harley Kirschenmann of Denver, CO, and Larry (Jackie) Kirschenmann of Minneapolis, MN, also survive him.
