Eric Jennings, who manages a cattle farm outside of Rapid City, notes a decline in the growth of cool-season grasses, prompting a shift to warm-season varieties. “Relying on warm-season grasses has become crucial for us,” Jennings remarked.

This agricultural pivot aligns with a broader trend towards precision agriculture, a burgeoning technique praised for optimizing inputs such as seeds, fertilizer, and water, thereby maximizing yields and profits. One prominent advocate for improving soil health is Dave Ollila, a full-time rancher in Newell, South Dakota. With rangelands composed of approximately 80% grass and 20% other vegetation like forbs, shrubs, and legumes, Ollila emphasizes soil health as a key factor to bolster rangeland resilience to climate fluctuations. “Healthy land directly correlates with good soil biology,” Ollila explains. He suggests techniques such as minimizing disturbances, maintaining plant diversity, and employing livestock in nutrient cycling to enhance overall land quality.

Rising Rents and Regional Adaptation

South Dakota saw the pastureland rents in 2025 range from $6.80 to a high of $73 per acre, contextualized by the rising cattle prices that affect profitability and land access. Among those at the forefront of tackling these issues are individuals like Jennings and Ollila, who are adopting innovative methods to remain resilient.

As climate challenges persist and the value of pasturelands increases, South Dakota ranchers are urged to reflect on both historical successes and new opportunities for sustainable growth. According to Ollila, “as farmers and ranchers approach how to make a living in ranching, they must consider what has worked historically while exploring new strategies for sustainability.”
