Remembering Martin Joseph Ludwig: A South Dakota Native with an Unyielding Spirit
In the heart of South Dakota, where the rolling plains meet industrious hands, Martin “Marty” Joseph Ludwig’s legacy shines brightly. Born in Sioux Falls on September 28, 1954, Marty lived a life rich in family, service, and craftsmanship, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. His journey came to an end on July 12, 2026, but his story remains a testament to the values of hard work and family dedication, deeply rooted in South Dakota culture.
Marty grew up as the sixth of twelve siblings in a bustling household in southeastern South Dakota. His early years were marked by the rhythm of farm life, learning the importance of community, resilience, and a love for the great outdoors. His childhood adventures in hunting, trapping, and especially fishing, carved out a profound connection with nature that he carried throughout his life.
At Hurley High School, where he was an active member of the wrestling team, Marty embraced the community spirit that characterizes the people of South Dakota. Graduating with the Class of 1972, he soon answered the call of duty, serving his country in the United States Army from 1972 to 1974. His honorable discharge was a testament to his dedication and patriotism.
Following his service, Marty returned to his home state, embarking on a journey across various trades before discovering his true calling. His remarkable mechanical aptitude and determination led him to establish Ludwig’s Plumbing and Heating, a respected business that became synonymous with quality and reliability in the community.

In 1988, Marty’s life took another joyful turn when he married, welcoming his beloved son, Tyler. Marty’s love for the outdoors was a legacy he proudly passed on to Tyler. Together, they created countless memories during fishing trips on Lake Oahe and pheasant hunting sessions accompanied by their trusty German Shorthaired Pointer, Hunter.
Marty’s reputation as a masterful plumber was rivaled only by his skills as a devoted motocross dad. He meticulously maintained Tyler’s bikes, ensuring they were always race-ready—a true testament to his patience and skill.

While Marty is no longer with us, his spirit endures in the values he instilled in his family and community. His siblings remain a testament to the strong family ties that bind many South Dakotans. Survived by Linda Sampson of Viborg, Betty Sampson of Irene, Rita Chamberlain of Broken Arrow, and others, their embrace of life mirrors Marty’s own journey.

The celebration of Marty’s life will be held at Mac’s Smokehouse in Casper, Wyoming, but another heartfelt tribute will take place in Viborg, South Dakota, later in August. This dual celebration perfectly encapsulates Marty’s impact on both his immediate and broader community.
