Anna Willis: Elevating South Dakota in Track & Field

South Dakota continues to shine on the national athletics stage, bolstered by the exceptional performance of Anna Willis, who was recently named the Summit League Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. This accolade underscores her remarkable achievements throughout the 2026 track and field season, including a historic third-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

An athlete emerging from the vibrant sports ecosystem of South Dakota, Willis has not only set a new outdoor school record but also has elevated the state’s status in college athletics. Her prowess in the women’s pole vault, marked by a record-breaking clearance of 15-2 ¾ (4.64m), positions her among the elite athletes nationwide.

The story of Willis is one of dedication and perseverance, reflective of the values held dear by the people of South Dakota. Residents of this great state take immense pride in their local athletes, whose efforts resonate with South Dakota’s spirit of resilience and determination.

Throughout the season, Willis consistently demonstrated stellar performances. She maintained a record of finishing inside the top three at each meet, showcasing her consistency and talent. Her display at the Drake Relays, where she notched a record clearance of 15-2 ¼ (4.63m), stands as a testament to her skill and competitiveness.

South Dakota is no stranger to producing top-tier field athletes. Past recipients of the Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year award from the state include the formidable Bethany (Buell) Firsick, Emily Grove, and Gen Hirata. These women, much like Willis, have left indelible marks on South Dakota’s track and field legacy.

This accolade marks the seventh instance a South Dakota athlete has claimed the prestigious outdoor field honor on the women’s side. The University of South Dakota, renowned for fostering sporting excellence, continues to nurture athletes who excel on both national and international stages.

For Willis, the journey is far from over. She is set to participate in the United States Championships in New York this July. This upcoming competition represents not only a chance to further her personal achievements but also to once again showcase the competitive spirit of South Dakota on a larger stage.
