Fieldwork Begins in Southeast South Dakota, Optimism High for Spring Planting

April 13, 2026 By Carah Hart

In the heartland of South Dakota, particularly in Davison County, the agricultural season is off to a promising start as farmers gear up for planting following the retreat of frost threats. Kevin Deinert, a local farmer, reports significant activity on the fields, with many farmers engaging in light tillage and extensive fertilizer application to prepare their land for a successful planting season.

“People are scratching around in the dirt, doing a little light tillage and there’s a lot of fertilizer going on,” said Deinert, optimistic that despite dry soil conditions, the coming weeks will bring the needed moisture. This optimism is echoed across South Dakota, given last year’s record-setting corn production and notable increase in soybean yields.

The timing appears strategic, as Deinert plans to start planting soybeans next week. Many local farmers are cautious, waiting for the frost risk to completely subside, anticipated for later this week or early next week. This approach is grounded in the adage, “plant in the dust, bins will bust,” suggesting that planting in dry conditions could lead to an abundant harvest.

Looking back to 2025, South Dakota enjoyed unprecedented agricultural success, capturing record levels in corn production and substantial improvements in soybean output. This year, as of the latest reports from the USDA, corn and soybean planting is limited statewide, with a mere 2% of sorghum and 15% of spring wheat planted. Meanwhile, the winter wheat conditions are rated at 33% good, indicating room for improvement yet highlighting potential as planting gets underway.

The agricultural landscape in Southeast South Dakota, marked by its pristine farmlands and resilient farmers, serves as a backbone for the state’s economy. The anticipation surrounding this planting season reflects broader hopes for another year of fruitful yields, reinforcing South Dakota’s notable position in the national agricultural framework.

As fieldwork progresses, farmers continue to rely on weather forecasts and historical wisdom to guide their decisions. The commitment to agriculture is unwavering, as demonstrated by the continued efforts in fertilizer application and tillage, key processes setting the stage for a successful planting season in Davison County and beyond.

This update not only captures the essence of South Dakota’s deep-rooted agricultural practices but also emphasizes the modern challenges and strategies farmers face. With a combination of traditional wisdom and modern techniques, South Dakota’s farmers are preparing for a fruitful planting season.
