South Dakota: Poised as a National Security Powerhouse Amid Global Tensions

A week ago, I went to bed as a peacetime governor and woke up to a nation at war. President Donald J. Trump’s Operation Epic Fury delivered a decisive strike against state-sponsored terrorism in Iran. This includes the termination of the Iranian Ayatollah and a severe blow to the Iranian government. Such global events extend their reach to our doorstep, particularly here in South Dakota.

Ellsworth Air Force Base played a pivotal role in Operation Epic Fury, showcasing the bravery and dedication of our military personnel. Their tireless efforts exemplify South Dakota’s key contribution to national security.

These events invariably alter the landscape back home. As Commander in Chief of our National Guard, I received an extensive briefing on the implications for South Dakota’s forces. The prospect of cyberattacks looms large, threatening our infrastructure, economy, and way of life.

Our foremost mission is safeguarding residents. With heightened threats at our digital gates, I’ve directed coordination with the Department of Public Safety and our National Guard to strengthen our defenses, identify vulnerabilities, and monitor potential cyber threats with our military, law enforcement, and intelligence alliances.

Last year’s establishment of the Governor’s Resilient Infrastructure Task Force (GRIT) bore fruit with the signing of a significant cybersecurity bill, positioning South Dakota as a leader in protective measures.

In my State of the State Address, I declared that national security is South Dakota’s “Next Big Industry.” With projects like the introduction of the B-21 Raider at Ellsworth Air Force Base and advanced cybersecurity training at Dakota State University, South Dakota is actively contributing to the fabric of national security.

Agriculture, our state’s backbone, supplies the world’s food — an industry intrinsically linked to our nation’s food security. Our energy sector, crucial to national security, continues to expand, with ongoing efforts to sustain this growth.

Through strategic coordination and enhancement of our resources, South Dakota’s role in national security is set to expand, ensuring the strength, safety, and freedom of both our state and the country. I am honored to serve during challenging times such as these. God bless America.
