The event, nestled in the picturesque hills of Rapid City, South Dakota, drew participants from across the region including local ranchers who rely heavily on these dogs for their everyday operations. Among them was Tim Naasz from Platte, South Dakota, whose young Border Collie, Harvey, astounded audiences with his natural herding talents at merely seven months of age, even without formal training. “We let the dog go and just naturally she got the cattle in within five minutes,” Naasz shared, a testimony to the breed’s genetic herding prowess.

Border Collies, renowned for their superior intelligence and unwavering work ethic, have been in the business of herding livestock for more than 300 years. They possess a natural instinct that is refined over centuries, making them indispensable to farmers and ranchers, particularly in the vast grazing lands of South Dakota.

“I actually don’t know how you would move sheep without a dog,” mused Wendy Auzqui of Clearmont, Wyoming. Her reliance on Border Collies is echoed by many in the region who appreciate the ease and efficiency these dogs bring. “They read the sheep so well and they understand the job,” Auzqui elaborated, emphasizing the critical role these dogs play on sheep ranches.

The trials not only celebrate this traditional use but also present the high-energy environment of competition, markedly different from routine farm life. With the pressure of the crowd and time constraints, handlers and their dogs must perform with precision and speed. “So much energy here and you have to do it fast,” noted Auzqui, highlighting the contrast from the leisurely pace at home.
