This milestone opening, occurring on December 22, 2025, conveniently aligns with the last-minute holiday shopping surge, offering the residents of South Dakota an opportunity to experience the state’s cherished local flavors. As an essential addition to the community, this store further cements Dakota Butcher’s commitment to bringing quality, locally-crafted products to more South Dakotans.
The new Dakota Butcher store is strategically situated at The Bridges at 57th, located on the bustling intersection of 57th Street and Western Avenue. Spanning an impressive 8,000 square feet, this facility is the chain’s seventh location within South Dakota, reflecting its growing popularity and the demand for its unique products statewide.

Randy Gruenwald
Owned by Randy and Karen Gruenwald, Dakota Butcher was originally acquired in 2009. The Gruenwalds, residents of Watertown, bring a deep personal connection to Sioux Falls through family ties. Their passion for delivering quality products continues to resonate deeply with locals, marking yet another chapter of their family’s involvement in the local business landscape.
“I really like the store. I think it looks really good,” Karen Gruenwald expressed with enthusiasm. “We’ve had a lot of people just come in and walk around. … They said, ‘We’ll be back.’ It feels good to be open.”
Both Randy and Karen shared their vision of creating a distinctive shopping experience, with a focus on quality and variety. The Sioux Falls location features a notable 36-foot meat counter, teeming with an array of meats and seafood, showcasing Dakota Butcher’s unique charm across the state. Dedicated to replicating their hallmark of excellence, the store presents a selection of homemade meat sticks, sausages, and the rare ring bologna.
The Gruenwalds’ commitment to novelty and quality doesn’t stop at meats; they also offer freshly baked bread and buns every day. An 8-foot display of grab-and-go meals, alongside take-and-bake pizzas, ensures customers a wide selection of convenient options.
“We try to put out a lot of varieties that are unique to our own butcher shop,” Randy Gruenwald explained. “We make our own meat sticks and sausages. You don’t find ring bologna anymore like we make. We try to make things no one else does. Find that niche that no one else does and we try to perfect that niche.”

Customers will also discover a well-stocked grocery section featuring locally made pickled foods, assorted seasonings, and the beloved Dimock Cheese products—celebrated throughout the region for their handcrafted excellence.
With the store operational from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, Dakota Butcher caters to early risers and after-work shoppers alike. The store remains closed on Sundays, with special hours in observance for Christmas and New Year’s holidays, closing at noon on Christmas Eve.
Looking ahead, Dakota Butcher plans to introduce meat processing services come January 1, 2026. This service will be a boon for local hunters, offering convenient processing of deer with comprehensive options: full processing at their Watertown facility or DIY processing with complete kits available in-store.
Of particular interest is the announcement of job openings at the new location. Seeking to strengthen its team, Dakota Butcher is actively recruiting, especially for meat cutters. Perspectives and passion in the art of butchery are welcome, with applications accepted both in-store and online at Dakota Butcher Careers.
