Pierre, SD – Every year, November 20 marks a special day of observance: National Rural Health Day. This significant occasion, led by the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH), underscores the unique healthcare challenges faced by rural communities across the nation. In South Dakota, a state where approximately 43% of the population resides in rural or frontier areas, this day is especially significant. Governor Larry Rhoden, an advocate of rural health, has once again emphasized his commitment to enhancing healthcare services in these areas.

“I am proud to live in and govern a state where our rural heritage is our strength. We will continue to make wise investments to support rural health to keep South Dakota strong, safe, and free,” declared Governor Rhoden upon signing the proclamation declaring November 20, 2025, as “Rural Health Day” in South Dakota.

South Dakota stands out for its expansive rural identity, with 30 of the state’s 66 counties categorized as rural and 34 as frontier. This geographical distinction adds layers of complexity to healthcare delivery, necessitating innovative, community-centered solutions.

To address these challenges, the South Dakota Office of Rural Health and Emergency Services is actively collaborating with local partners. Their collective efforts aim to improve access to care, bolster healthcare workforce recruitment, strengthen emergency medical services, and expand the use of healthcare technology.

This year, Jones County Ambulance Service has been honored as South Dakota’s 2025 Community Star by NOSORH. This recognition is part of the Community Star Recognition Program, which has acknowledged outstanding contributions to rural health since 2015. Jones County Ambulance Service’s dedication to residents across central South Dakota reflects the values of professionalism, compassion, and community partnership integral to the state’s ethos.

“Rural health is a cornerstone of South Dakota’s identity and strength,” said South Dakota Department of Health Secretary Melissa Magstadt. “We celebrate the people and organizations who work every day to ensure that our rural and frontier communities receive high-quality, accessible care. Jones County Ambulance Service reflects the dedication, compassion, and resilience that make South Dakota strong. We are proud to recognize them as our 2025 Community Star.”
