South Dakota Coyotes Welcome Libero Katherine Thompson to 2025 Volleyball Roster
The University of South Dakota is delighted to announce the addition of libero and defensive specialist Katherine Thompson to its 2025 volleyball roster. Katherine’s commitment to joining the South Dakota Coyotes marks a significant milestone in enhancing the team’s defensive capabilities and exemplifies the thriving volleyball culture in South Dakota.
Thompson hails from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, but her volleyball journey now brings her to the vibrant community of Vermillion, South Dakota, where she is set to become an integral part of the Coyotes’ roster. Under the guidance of esteemed head coach Leanne Williamson, Thompson’s impressive defensive skills are anticipated to elevate the team’s performance in the upcoming seasons.
Katherine spent her initial collegiate years at Marist College, amassing a remarkable record over 42 matches and 154 sets, where she accumulated a total of 488 digs, 112 assists, and 49 aces. Her performance during the 2024 season was outstanding, ranking sixth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for digs per set (3.30) and seventh for aces per set (0.42).
Thompson brings with her not only her expertise but also a commendable academic track record. She was named to the Academic Honor Roll during both years at Marist, showcasing her dedication both on and off the court. Her achievements are a testament to the balance of athletic and academic excellence, which is highly valued at the University of South Dakota.
Thompson’s addition to the Coyotes is timely as South Dakota continues to celebrate its rich history and community involvement in sports. Volleyball in South Dakota is more than just a sport; it is a community affair that brings people together, bolsters local pride, and encourages the next generation to take part in physical activity and team camaraderie.
“We are excited to add Katherine to our Coyote Family! We are looking forward to adding her two years as a collegiate libero experience to our deep core of liberos,” Williamson remarked. “Our program prides itself on being a gritty defensive team, and Katherine’s skill set, attitude, and competitiveness will be a perfect addition to our group!”
Thompson’s journey through Arrowhead Union High School is just as impressive, where she was a three-year varsity member and team captain her senior season. Katherine excelled not only in athletics but was also heavily involved in academics, being part of the National Honors Society and the Spanish National Honors Society. This multidimensional approach is reflective of The University of South Dakota’s values, which emphasize comprehensive development beyond sports.
As South Dakota gears up to compete against major contenders, Thompson’s arrival is expected to bring new energy and skill. Fans across the state, from the bustling city of Sioux Falls to the picturesque plains of the Badlands, are excited to witness her debut in the upcoming season. The fervor surrounding college volleyball is palpable here, seen in enthusiastic support at games, robust youth programs, and dynamic volleyball camps that inspire young athletes.
